An Audio Rehearsed Reading for Scoundrels (Reading Series)

This season we are excited to present to our audiences the winner of a new contest hosted in collaboration with the American Literary Translators Association (ALTA). This year’s competition winner, The Crack: Among Wild Animals, has been selected from a diverse field of plays translated into English that that explore the theme of ‘In Between’. Lucía, Nico and Tomás are three city-dwelling friends who decide to spend a weekend away at a rustic country cottage together to relax. However, with echoes of Sartre’s No Exit, the three friends find the time away with each other more than they ever bargained for.

This translation was graciously funded by the Society of Authors and Publishers of Spain (SGAE).

Neil Blackadder

Neil Blackadder is a translator of drama and prose from German and French, specializing in contemporary theatre, and recently retired from a 25-year career teaching theater at Knox College and Duke University. His translations of plays by Lukas Bärfuss, Ewald Palmetshofer, and Rebekka Kricheldorf have been produced in London, New York, Chicago, and elsewhere, while many others by playwrights including Ferdinand Schmalz, Mishka Lavigne, Maxi Obexer, and Thomas Arzt have been published, and presented in staged readings. Neil is active in ALTA and the Third Coast Translators Collective, serves on the advisory board of The Mercurian, and co-founded TinT, the Theatre in Translation network.

Bryan Rafael Falcón

Bryan is an award-winning director (MFA Directing, Western Illinois, 2001) and the Artistic and Managing Director at The Scoundrel and Scamp Theatre. At the S&S Bryan has directed Cloud Tectonics, Blood Wedding, My Life in Sports, Two Plays for Lost Souls: The Love Talker & The Yellow Wallpaper, Oscar Wilde's Salomé, There is a Happiness That Morning Is (Best Play, 2018 Arizona Daily Star Mac Award) and A Public Reading of an Unproduced Screenplay About the Death of Walt Disney, for which he won the 2017 Arizona Daily Star Mac Award for Best Director. In Tucson, Bryan has directed at The Rogue Theatre, including The New Electric Ballroom and Awake and Sing. He was recognized as Best Director (2012 Arizona Daily Star Mac Award) for the show The Night Heron. Bryan serves as board president of the Tucson-based Southwest Folklife Alliance, and as a board member at The Rogue Theatre.

WINNER OF OUR 2020 PLAYS IN TRANSLATION CONTEST

(Lauren) L. Finch (Translator) is a writer, editor and translator who spends her days coordinating communications for a human rights technology NGO. On nights, weekends and whenever else the clock is feeling generous, she can be found translating literature and theatre into English, as well as crafting a bit of fiction of her own. Previously, she's worked as a journalist, community manager, content marketer, English teacher, book reviewer, administrative assistant and food server. She holds bachelor's degrees in journalism and Spanish, and a master's degree in translation. Originally from the US, she has called Spain home since 2011.

GRACIA MORALES

Gracia Morales (Playwright) is a dramatist, poet and co-founder of the Remiendo Theatre in Granada, Spain, a theatre which has staged nine of her plays and where she occasionally takes up the roles of actor and assistant director. She is also a professor of Hispanic literature at the University of Granada. She has published and premiered more than 15 theatrical works, some of which have been translated into eight different languages. She is the winner of, among other prizes, the Marqués de Bradomín Award; the Miguel Romero Esteo Award; the Jardiel Poncela Theatre Award and the Children's Theatre Award, both presented by the Society of Authors and Publishers of Spain (SGAE); and the Prize for Best Theatrical Authorship at the Lorca Awards for Andalusian Theatre.

JUAN ALBERTO SALVATIERRA

Juan Alberto Salvatierra (Playwright)  is a director and dramatist from the city of Algeciras, Spain. He has a degree in acting, stage direction and dramaturgy from the Escuela Superior de Arte Dramático in Málaga, where he currently teaches dramatic literature classes. He joined Remiendo Theatre in 2006. He was named the winner of the 1st Ana Caro Theatre Award in 2019 by the UK-based Cervantes Theatre and the Spanish publisher Ediciones Antigona for his play Joe Strummer Takes a Walk. Other honors include: the Prize for Best Theatrical Authorship at the Lorca Awards for Andalusian Theatre, the Miguel Romero Esteo Award, and the Rafael Guerrero Award.

CLAIRE MANNLE

Claire Marie Mannle (Director) is an actor, writer and director, At The Scoundrel & Scamp she directed Eurydice and Mr. Burns, A Post-Electric Play and performed in The Yellow Wallpaper. Outside of the S&S her recent directing work includes an adaptation of Euripides’ The Bacchae (SITI Company’s Skidmore Intensive) and Nor Any Drop to Drink, a devised play about water issues in the Southwest (UA Studio Series). As an actor, she has performed around town in King Lear, The Grapes of Wrath, Macbeth, and The White Snake at The Rogue Theatre and in The Tempest andThe Comedy of Errors for Arizona Repertory Theatre. She is an Instructor for the School of Theatre, Film, and Television at The University of Arizona. A New York City native raised in the Midwest, she came to Tucson via Los Angeles where she worked with The Grand Guignolers, Cornerstone Theater Company, A Noise Within, The Antaeus Academy, and SITI Company. She has her MFA from the Dell’Arte International School of Physical Theater and her BA from Smith College.

GRETCHEN WIRGES

Gretchen Wirges (Lucía) is excited to be appearing in her sixth production at Scoundrel & Scamp, including It Is Magic, Eurydice, The Little Prince, The Light Princess and The Thanksgiving Play. She is currently co-directing Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins at The S&S. She has been acting, directing and writing for Tucson stages for nearly 10 years. Gretchen is also an accomplished improv teacher and performer. She performs around the country with her long-form improv duo Ex-Boyfriend. She is the President of the Tucson Fringe Festival Board and writes for the feminist-oriented theater review site Taming of the Review.

LANCE GUZMAN

Lance Guzman (Nico) is on his 4th season with Scoundrel and Scamp. He played in It Is Magic, The Little Prince, Salome, Mr. Burns: a post-electric play, The Scamp Radio (1/2) Hour and Blood Wedding. Other stage works he has been involved in are The University of Arizona productions of This Heart in My Mouth is Called Home, Giants Have Us in Their Books and Mother of Exiles. He has also been seen in The Rogue Theatre productions of Dutchman, Enemy of the People, and Moby Dick. Not only does he act on stage but he also has appeared in film for the University and the New York Film Academy. He is a University of Arizona graduate with a BA in Theatre Arts and a student of the Phil Bennett Theatre Lab. Lance loves making music, boxing training, and studying astronomy.

RAY SERRANO

This is Ray Serrano’s (Tomás) first time joining the Scoundrel & Scamp Theatre and he is quite enthusiastic about it. Tucson native, Ray has worked in the community for the last 10 years guiding and supporting local artistry. One of his favorite projects he coordinated was the Free on 4th Ave Community event which provided free resources and an open mic opportunity for youth to rap, sing or read poetry. Ray attended the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in Los Angeles, CA and graduated in 2011. He has worked few commercials and a lot more personal projects. Ray is also a fitness instructor and teaches Cycling Studio classes at VASA Fitness in Tucson, AZ. He would like to thank his family & friends, and partner of 15 years, Kunthea Chhorn. I love you my love. 

Erin Buckley

This is Erin Buckley's (Stage Directions) first time working with The Scoundrel & Scamp. She is from Flagstaff Arizona where she began doing theatre at Theatikos Theatre Company at the age of 6. She attended Flagstaff Arts and Leadership Academy where she performed in shows such as Cabaret (Sally Bowles), The Cherry Orchid (Lyubov), and Hamlet (Ophelia). She is currently a senior at the UofA pursuing her degree in Theatre Arts. Around Tucson, she has performed in Blithe Spirit (Edith) and The Crucible (Susanna) at The Rogue Theatre. She is so excited to have the opportunity to work with The Scoundrel and Scamp and hopes that everyone enjoys the show!
