The Scoundrel & Scamp Theatre’s

Inclusion and Diversity Programming and Practices

In support of our mission, The Scoundrel & Scamp Theatre provides opportunities that eliminate barriers to positive engagement and participation of creatives. Here are program examples: :

  • Emerging Playwright Fellowship – This fellowship directly supports emerging BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ playwrights by pairing them with established artists for mentorship to facilitate our goal of expanding the body of work by new and diverse voices.

  • AZ Inclusive Casting platform – The Scoundrel & Scamp Theatre is proud to have established this platform now utilized by many local theater companies. The platform promotes a richer, more diverse theater community by revealing the depth of talent available to local theater companies. By revealing the diverse voices, backgrounds and experiences in our community, other theater companies are encouraged to make programming choices that are otherwise deemed too risky. By matching artists to companies, more opportunities are available to actors from historically underrepresented populations.

  • Youth Enrichment – We feature immersive experiences including camps, classes, mentorship and performance opportunities for creatives as young as 8 years old.

  • Access to Educational Opportunities - In order to help overcome social-economic barriers we offer scholarships to our camps and classes to 100% of families who request assistance.

  • Plays-in-Translation Contest – The Scoundrel and Scamp builds empathy and presents international viewpoints through their annual partnership with the American Literary Translators Association. Each year, we invite translators to submit plays in English originally written in a different language. Winning translators receive a cash award as well as an opportunity to see their play performed as an in-person, staged reading at The Scoundrel & Scamp Theatre.

  • Stories for Scamps – We feature curated stories streamed online with content that inspires empathy and encourages discourse. Devoted to art positivity and inclusion, The Scoundrel & Scamp Theatre is always open to evolving as we walk this journey with our community of artists and audience.

Land Acknowledgement

The Scoundrel & Scamp Theatre acknowledges the space in which we gather to create art and share stories is part of the traditional, ancestral and unceded territories of the Hohokam, Tohono O’odham and the Pascua Yaqui peoples who have enriched the land for thousands of years. We recognize the history and impact of continued injustices against Indigenous peoples, including sustained colonialism. Members of Scoundrel & Scamp strive to be mindful of our own participation.

The Scoundrel & Scamp Theatre respects and appreciates the privilege to learn from the abundant lifeways Indigenous peoples have developed through the labor of their hands, hearts and minds across the centuries.
