Emerging Playwrights Fellowship
2022-2023 BIPOC Fellowship
** Application CLOSED **
As part of our mission to foster the next generation of theater-goers as well as the next generation of theater artists, the The Scoundrel & Scamp Theatre is pleased to present the newly-expanded S&S Emerging Playwrights Fellowship.
Our Emerging Playwrights Fellowship will aid and elevate an emerging playwright. Through the EPF, we seek to address the lack of theatrical representation for communities who have been historically excluded both on the page and on the stage. The 2022-23 EPF will fund a playwright of Black, Asian American, Latino/Latina, Indigenous, or Arab American descent who wishes to write for audiences of all ages. We are seeking to grow a body of work: plays that appeal to young audiences and their adults by engaging all ages through emotionally resonant storytelling.
Mentorship and Collaboration: Each playwright will be paired with a mentor who is an established professional director/dramaturg and will have access to a support team of other theater professionals including actors, artists and other playwrights. The playwright will meet weekly with their director/dramaturg and with the other members of their support team as needed. Weekly meetings can be in person or virtual.
Duration: The fellowship runs from September 2022 through April 2023. The fellowship will culminate in a two week residency on-site at the Scoundrel and Scamp and an open-to-the-public presentation of their work (a selection or in its entirety), followed by a community discussion.
Award: The EPF provides an award of $3000 for the chosen Playwright Fellow as well as travel expenses, lodging and a per-diem for the final two weeks of the fellowship in Spring of 2023.
Applications from emerging BIPOC playwrights will be accepted March 15th - May 23, 2022 and all applicants will be notified of the results of the application process in June. This is a season-long fellowship. We will open applications for the next 2023-2024 Emerging Playwrights Fellowship in spring of 2023.
